There’s just something about relaxing and having fun outdoors that many of us just can’t get enough of.

Whether you enjoy a barbeque on a summer evening, having family and friends over for drinks, or just enjoying some fresh air while you read a book - we all want to spend some extra time outside.

For many, the end of summer marks the end of enjoying these simple privileges. But, that doesn't have to be the case!

Here are some simple tips to help you create the perfect outdoor living space - meaning you can enjoy time in your yard throughout the entire year.

Exposure Changes Everything

The direction your outdoor space faces can really define its functionality.

For example, north-facing views provide lighting that is consistent throughout the day, while eastern exposure means morning light which can be a little harsh.

When designing the layout of your outdoor living space, consider when you want the most lighting, if you want a shaded area, and also where the harshest winds come from during the colder months.

Warmth is Key

The easiest way to extend outdoor hours is to simply add a source of heat. Sometimes putting on a sweater just isn’t enough to continue enjoying the outdoors!

And, not only will a source of heat warm you and your guests up - it’s also an aesthetic place to gather around and enjoy a  chat with a hot drink.

Your best options are a simple fire pit, installing an outdoor fireplace or purchasing an outdoor heater.

Top Tip: Be sure no furniture is too close to the heat source!

Light it Up

Lighting does two things. It makes it easier to see (duh!) and it also helps to set the mood.

As it stays brighter later during the summer months, adding some solar powered lanterns or even some LED string lights will help extend your evening and create a summery vibe.

They’ll also come in handy during the darker, cooler months too. Add a few more - especially near pathways - so you and your friends can see each other, and also not miss a step when heading inside to use the washroom or hit the hay!

If you’re using any light sources set to a timer, be sure to readjust the hours depending on the season and the hours of light.

Stay Covered

Whether you need to seek shade on a scorching summer’s day, or stay dry on a wet evening, adding some cover to your outdoor area is always a good idea.

Whether you fancy building a pergola or covering your outdoor area with some form of roof, covering up is an easy way to ensure comfort - no matter what the weather brings.

Comfortable & Qaulity Furnishings

A crucial aspect of enjoying outdoor living all year round is having the right furnishings.

Having the appropriate outdoor furniture depends on your intended use of the space. If it’s for dining, you’ll need a grill and a dining table, if it’s for entertaining, you might consider a TV area. If it’s for relaxing, maybe a sun lounger or even a hammock! If you want to do all three, you’ll need a good combination.

Whatever you decide to go with, always select furniture that is comfortable - otherwise people will opt for the comfy couch in the living room.

It’s also important your furniture is weather resistant - especially those that won’t be in covered areas.  Furniture made from materials like powder-coated steel, teak, and polyresin wicker are built to withstand the elements.

Top Tip: Bring in, or cover your cushions before it rains or snows.
